I haven't had time to look in on the group forums like I should have, but I was surprised at the pre-reaction to The Part About the Crimes, that so many readers immediately wanted to start taking (real) action (in the "real" world) to "help these women." I am not that far into The Part About the Crimes yet, but it is very much a police procedural, not calling me to direct action, and I still don't know what Bolaño is saying in the novel as a whole. So yes, both reading- and discussionwise it should be an interesting time ahead.

Seaman's speech, seemingly delivered in real time with all the Melvillean portents about what might lie ahead for Fate in Santa Teresa and by extension the rest of us in what's left of the novel, was one of my favorite parts of the Fate book. I also loved its hyper-journalistic feel as a whole, but in retrospect, I can only assure you that it's the calm before the storm. You have the two best, most intense parts of the book still eagerly awaiting you, Nicole, as well as a great debate pending (I imagine, if my readalong group was at all typical) regarding The Part About the Crimes. I envy you what lies ahead reading-wise and discussion-wise!
