Very nice website! I am currently writing a paper on this short story, about Crane's use of the repetition of the phrase "If I am going to be drowned..."

Check out our site, I think you will like it!

I've been really enjoying your posts on your maritime reading. Considering you enjoyed this, I think you should give The Red Badge of Courage another try- you might be surprised! I find it a lyrical and moving account of a young man at war.

I tried reading "The Red Badge of Courage" in middle school and failed. I've been scolded for this ever since. If you recommend "The Open Boat" over "The Red Badge of Courage", I'll take your word for it.

(by the way, this sea-reading project is really interesting to read about... I never knew there were quite so many books about the sea...)

I know, overdose is a real danger. I suppose I do have Master and Commander on the shelf...was going to skip it but could be a good idea to have in the mix. I do feel like once I leave what is for me the safety of the sea I will be a little lost though.

I haven't even written about In Hazard yet either, so watch out.

Crane was a poet, too, a weird one, but plenty lyrical, I guess. This is from "War Is Kind," published a year after "The Open Boat":

To the maiden
The sea was blue meadow,
Alive with little froth-people
Singing.

To the sailor, wrecked,
The sea was dead grey walls
Superlative in vacancy,
Upon which nevertheless at fateful time
Was written
The grim hatred of nature.

By the way: "The Open Boat," "Bartleby," Dana - careful you don't overdose on the good stuff! Do you have something mediocre on the book pile, just to smooth things out?

Which reminds me, somehow, that you have convinced me I need to read Richard Hughes.
