Sunday Salon

Sunday SalonDoes it even count as a Sunday when I don’t have to work tomorrow? I suppose it does, but the day loses all of its bittersweet qualities that way. Which actually means I can focus more on reading without guilt about not doing all those other pesky things that should be done.

So today so far has been a day of dipping in and out of things. American Sea Writing, for one. Read an excerpt of Rachel Carson, who turns out to be a very lyrical writer. The maritime lit project is almost over, but I just keep coming across more and more that I want to add to it—but for another time, rather than risking oceanic burnout. I’ve also gotten in my head the idea that I’m going to start reading The Novel from cover to cover (both volumes)—albeit very slowly. So I read the first essay. It’s a start. I’m hoping to pick it up at least a few times a week, reading an essay each time, and to use it as a jumping-off point for some of the de-humiliations I’d like to get to.

And yesterday I picked up volume III in that Great Sermon Handicap series: this time the English and phonetic English texts sandwich versions in Swedish, Danish, Nynorsk, Norwegian, Faroese, Old Norse, and Icelandic. So…still nothing I can really read. But getting a bit closer.

  • I haven’t seemed to get much reading done today either. The weather is overcast and chilly and I never could get warm all day.

  • I’m currently reading a maritime book: Sea of Poppies. Apparently, though, I’ve been reading blogs all day, lol.

  • P.S. Sad to know your sea-faring reading is almost over. I enjoyed reading your thoughts.. and so many books I haven’t encountered before. Am excited about what your next theme will be. :)

  • Well then the good news is that my posting is behind my reading, and my reading isn’t done, so you’ll have a bit more to enjoy. Should probably take me through the end of February, I think.
