Today’s Question: Have you ever added a quote to the quotation field in common knowledge? What’s a quote you particularly like from a book, one that you know by heart?

No to the first question, but there are many I like and know by heart. Most of the ones I mentioned in this post, for example, especially the openings of Lolita, Pale Fire, and Ada. A middle-of-the-book quote that sticks out to me for some reason and was the first to come to mind when I saw this question is from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf: “George and Martha, sad, sad, sad.” And one of my other all-time favorites, the last line of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus: “Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen.” Ooh, too true.

I am a big fan of Post-It Flags for marking stuff like this when I’m reading, and for marking things I want to think about more or blog about later. But mostly I use them for sentences I really enjoy or passages that make me think “yes!”

  • My answer was no, too – I really hadn’t paid any attention to the Common Knowledge feature. It looks interesting, though. I like to mark quotes and passages with post-its, too. But I’m afraid I don’t memorize many of them.

  • I use the Post-it Flags, too – they’re a wonderful invention.
